Former Australian rugby league star Trent Merrin has been arrested and charged with allegedly stealing $140,000 price of cryptocurrency.
Detectives took the 36-year-old into custody at his Barrack Level house within the Illawarra on Tuesday, following a year-long investigation.
In November 2024, Orana Mid Western Police started trying into claims a 29-year-old man’s cryptocurrency account had been accessed with out permission.
Officers from the Lake Illawarra Police District and State Crime Command’s Cybercrime Squad raided Mr Merrin’s Barrack Level house on Tuesday morning.
They seized a number of digital units, which will probably be forensically examined.
Mr Merrin was taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station and charged with dishonestly acquiring monetary benefit by deception.
Police will allege the previous Dragons and Panthers ahead accessed the 29-year-old man’s account and transferred $140,000 price of cryptocurrency.
Mr Merrin received the 2010 NRL premiership with St George-Illawarra, and likewise performed for Penrith, NSW and Australia.
He retired from rugby league in April 2021.
He was granted conditional bail to seem earlier than Port Kembla Courtroom on December 3.
