The Sui Foundation reported a significant network outage on January 14, caused by an internal consensus processing disagreement among validators. This led to a six-hour interruption where validators were unable to certify new checkpoints, resulting in transaction submission timeouts. The outage was not related to network congestion or transaction volume, and user funds and states remained secure with no state forks or transaction rollbacks.
The issue stemmed from a bug in the consensus submission logic, which has since been addressed through a fix and validator upgrades, restoring normal operations. The foundation plans to enhance its systems with faster detection and recovery processes, automated operational tools, and expanded random testing to prevent future occurrences.
