The Ondo State Police Command has arrested an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) and three inspectors over a viral video displaying them making unprofessional and ethnically insensitive remarks to a member of the general public.
The officers had been arrested following the circulation of the video, which reportedly captured the incident throughout a stop-and-search operation alongside the Lagos-Benin Expressway.
Addressing journalists in Akure on Friday, the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Jimoh Abayomi, recognized the officers as AP/No. 207454 ASP Elomore Sodayo, AP/No. 332012 Inspector Adefila Adewale, AP/No. 332449 Inspector Olorunfemi Opeyemi and AP/No. 332369 Inspector Odusola Peter.
Abayomi mentioned the Commissioner of Police, Felix Ohagwu, had ordered a complete investigation into the incident to determine the circumstances surrounding the officers’ conduct and decide the extent of culpability of every of them.
He careworn that the Nigeria Police Force didn’t tolerate misconduct, incivility or any act able to undermining public confidence, selling ethnic division or bringing the Drive into disrepute.
In response to him, officers had been anticipated always to conduct themselves professionally, respect the dignity of all residents and function strictly in step with the Drive’s Code of Conduct and Commonplace Working Procedures.
He assured the general public that the investigation can be carried out in step with the rules of equity, transparency and accountability.
Abayomi added that any officer discovered to have violated the ethics and requirements of the Nigeria Police Drive would face applicable disciplinary measures in accordance with extant legal guidelines and established procedures.
He reaffirmed the Command’s dedication to skilled, intelligence-driven and community-oriented policing, whereas urging residents to stay law-abiding and proceed reporting incidents of police misconduct by the suitable criticism channels.
