SAVANNAH, Ga. — The U.S. Lawyer’s Workplace for the Southern District of Georgia has efficiently forfeited and returned about $84,327.50 to a victim of cryptocurrency theft, U.S. Lawyer Margaret E. Heap introduced Monday.
The funds had been recovered via a civil asset forfeiture motion, which concerned coordination between the Asset Forfeiture Unit, the FBI and the Division of Justice’s Cash Laundering and Asset Restoration Part.
The theft, which occurred in October 2024, concerned $124,000 in unauthorized transactions from a cryptocurrency deal with owned by a Richmond Hill resident, the U.S. Lawyer’s Workplace mentioned.
Upon discovering the theft, the victim reported the crime to native regulation enforcement and the FBI. The FBI mentioned brokers carried out a radical investigation and traced the stolen cryptocurrency and figuring out involvement of abroad actors, together with in Cambodia.
The FBI, working with the Asset Forfeiture Unit, shortly seized the traced cryptocurrency, which was later forfeited via a federal civil case in Savannah.
